An afternoon visit to the Tasikoko Wildlife Rescue Centre is a must:
Tasikoko is established as a facility to enable the confiscation of animals from illegal wildlife traders and smugglers. The rescue team assists the authorities by investigating wildlife crimes and providing evidence to aid prosecution.
Sulawesi, being the closest Indonesian island to the Philippines, has been exploited as a consolidation point for illegal shipments of wildlife and wildlife products from Java, Sumatra, Borneo, and the islands in the Eastern part of the Indonesian archipelago, especially Papua.
Orangutans, sun bears, gibbons, tarsiers, lorises, and pangolins were some of the most endangered mammals smuggled out of the country; however, cockatoos, hornbills, birds of paradise as well as turtles and other reptiles were shipped out in even bigger quantities.
The current team at Tasikoki is trying to establish financial self-sustainability of the project, develop the capacity to recommence active rescue and education work, as well as develop the knowledge and standards of the local staff for the better care of captive wildlife.
From sprawling peanut plantations to craftsmen working with ceramics and wood, the wonders of this destination are many and the surprises are very worth the journey. Enjoy lunch at a restaurant built over the water of a large inland lake before you begin the descent back to Lembeh, with many precious memories of Indonesia and its magical local flavor!
